Analysis: Magazine Adverts That Relate To My Genre
How do they relate to your genre and audience?
Ed Sheeran's Magazine Advert
As this was Sheeran's first commercial album, they have featured a close up image of Ed, like the one used on his album's front cover. This lures the audience in as they will recognise the look of Ed Sheeran from the close up shot of his face that is featured on his album's front cover.
They have also used the same distinctive colour scheme in order to instil a sense of familiarity to the audience, making them feel closer and more connected to the artist. This is done through the use of the colours black, white and orange. When the audience see these colours together, they will recognise the connotations of these colours towards the artist himself. The colour orange resembles his ginger hair which is unique in the industry, making him stand out to his audience.
The magazine advert also features a miniature image of his album's front cover but it stands out as it is a bright orange colour used in front of a predominantly black image. Therefore, the audience's attention is instantly drawn to the album cover in the bottom, left corner, regardless of how small it is.
The same typewriter-like font is used on the magazine advert as on the album cover. This simultaneous use of font draws a clear connection to the album cover. It, also, gives the impression that the music is personal to the artist as it connotes that he 'typed' it on his own, based on his own experiences.
The text 'The No.1 album' is the only piece of text (along with the album title) that is written in orange. This makes it stand out from the rest of the white text and attracts the audiences eyes to read what it says. It is important for the audience to see that this album is a No.1 album as it'll invite the non-established audience to listen to his music.
The image of him smiling gives a sense of personality to his album as the image is more natural and raw, rather than positioned and fake. This is conventional of the Indie/Folk genre as the talent featured within this genre is raw and is hardly done for the commercial success- but more for the love of music. This image of Ed Sheeran connotes the idea that this album is a clear insight of his personality and past experiences. This is also very typical of the Indie/Folk genre and the music produced by artists of this genre is commonly about personal events and issues, like love, heartbreak, etc. Unlike Pop, which tends to be mainly music about dance/drugs/sex.
Mumford & Sons' Magazine Advert
Album Cover
This magazine advert of the Folk band 'Mumford and Sons' is very simplistic and natural. This illustrates the idea that these aspects will be reflected through their music. As they are a Folk band, a sense of raw talent and love for music is expected by the audience as it is very conventional for them to have multiple music talents, whether they merely use their voice as an instrument or also play actual instruments.
The band members are comfortably positioned seated with the instruments they play in their hands. This way their instruments can be seen, reflecting their musicality. It is very common amongst Folk artists, to draw close attention to their musical talents rather than appearances. This explains why they have been pictured in a park, dressed comfortably in shirts and are naturally posed. A park has easy access and connotes a calm, natural atmosphere, rather than a heavily thought-through, unnatural pose.
The band members were pictured individually but each photo has been placed next to the others, to resemble a window. This establishes a clear connection to their album's front cover. This is because their front cover features the band, standing in front of a building, with windows with crosses in them. The four images put together resemble the window with the crosses in them.
The idea of the window connotes that this album gives a thorough and deep insight to each band member and their experiences. This is very generic of the Folk genre as their main focus is to portray their talents and Folk artists tend to feel that the best music is produced when it is close to their hearts. The music they make is more natural and real this way.
