Overview of Artist's Costume

Overview of Artist's Costume
How does it link to the music video and genre?

Short List: Fonts, Colours, Layout, Design Ideas

Short List: Fonts, Colours, Layout, Design Ideas

Fonts:
The idea of using a typewriter-like font really stood out to be for multiple reasons.
Example:

The first reason was because type-writers were used in the 80's. This era is also when the Indie genre was created, meaning it will attract my secondary audience of older men as it'll bring them a sense of nostalgia when they see the font as it'll remind them of when they were younger and were first introduced to the Indie genre which they loved then and still do now.
The typewriter-like font will also attract my primary audience of younger boys as it portrays a sense of personal experiences to the album. It is very generic of the Indie genre for the artist to have written his own songs based on his own experiences. Therefore, the typewriter-like font illustrates the idea that this album is very close to the artist's heart and says a lot about the artist's past and life.

Colours:
I think I want to keep the colour scheme to a minimum as it conventional for a Indie artist's album to be very simplistic and natural, which is why I will be using black, white and cream as my colour scheme.
Example:

As you can see, Ben Howard's album used very little colour and remained very simplistic and raw. I like to think that the colour of the album will be brought through the deeply written songs featured on the album. Indie artists tend not to pay much attention to the appearance of the artist, himself and album cover. It is more about how raw and how truthful the songs they write are.

Layout:
As it is the first album of my artist, I want to feature a close up/medium shot of him so there is a clear introduction between him and his intended audience. I want them to recognise him as an artist, through his music and through how he looks.
Example:

I like the idea of having one side dark and one side light. This connotes the idea that the album will tell you a lot about the artist himself and will convey all sides of the artist. It is conventional of the Indie genre for artists to produce music that is personal to them. And I want this idea to be portrayed through my artist's work.

Design Ideas:
The album as a whole will be very simplistic and natural.
The photo will be a simple mid shot/close up shot of the artist with his name in bold writing beside him- along with the album title 'Nostalgia'.
The simple vibe to the appearance of the album is generic of the Indie genre as they are primarily focused on the depth and truth of the music they make.

Analysis: Magazine Adverts That Relate To My Genre

Analysis: Magazine Adverts That Relate To My Genre
How do they relate to your genre and audience?

Ed Sheeran's Magazine Advert

As this was Sheeran's first commercial album, they have featured a close up image of Ed, like the one used on his album's front cover. This lures the audience in as they will recognise the look of Ed Sheeran from the close up shot of his face that is featured on his album's front cover.
They have also used the same distinctive colour scheme in order to instil a sense of familiarity to the audience, making them feel closer and more connected to the artist. This is done through the use of the colours black, white and orange. When the audience see these colours together, they will recognise the connotations of these colours towards the artist himself. The colour orange resembles his ginger hair which is unique in the industry, making him stand out to his audience.
The magazine advert also features a miniature image of his album's front cover but it stands out as it is a bright orange colour used in front of a predominantly black image. Therefore, the audience's attention is instantly drawn to the album cover in the bottom, left corner, regardless of how small it is.
The same typewriter-like font is used on the magazine advert as on the album cover. This simultaneous use of font draws a clear connection to the album cover. It, also, gives the impression that the music is personal to the artist as it connotes that he 'typed' it on his own, based on his own experiences.
The text 'The No.1 album' is the only piece of text (along with the album title) that is written in orange. This makes it stand out from the rest of the white text and attracts the audiences eyes to read what it says. It is important for the audience to see that this album is a No.1 album as it'll invite the non-established audience to listen to his music.
The image of him smiling gives a sense of personality to his album as the image is more natural and raw, rather than positioned and fake. This is conventional of the Indie/Folk genre as the talent featured within this genre is raw and is hardly done for the commercial success- but more for the love of music. This image of Ed Sheeran connotes the idea that this album is a clear insight of his personality and past experiences. This is also very typical of the Indie/Folk genre and the music produced by artists of this genre is commonly about personal events and issues, like love, heartbreak, etc. Unlike Pop, which tends to be mainly music about dance/drugs/sex.

Mumford & Sons' Magazine Advert

Album Cover

This magazine advert of the Folk band 'Mumford and Sons' is very simplistic and natural. This illustrates the idea that these aspects will be reflected through their music. As they are a Folk band, a sense of raw talent and love for music is expected by the audience as it is very conventional for them to have multiple music talents, whether they merely use their voice as an instrument or also play actual instruments.
The band members are comfortably positioned seated with the instruments they play in their hands. This way their instruments can be seen, reflecting their musicality. It is very common amongst Folk artists, to draw close attention to their musical talents rather than appearances. This explains why they have been pictured in a park, dressed comfortably in shirts and are naturally posed. A park has easy access and connotes a calm, natural atmosphere, rather than a heavily thought-through, unnatural pose.
The band members were pictured individually but each photo has been placed next to the others, to resemble a window. This establishes a clear connection to their album's front cover. This is because their front cover features the band, standing in front of a building, with windows with crosses in them. The four images put together resemble the window with the crosses in them.
The idea of the window connotes that this album gives a thorough and deep insight to each band member and their experiences. This is very generic of the Folk genre as their main focus is to portray their talents and Folk artists tend to feel that the best music is produced when it is close to their hearts. The music they make is more natural and real this way.

Planning Anacillary Products - Location Choice For Phtots.

Explain the reason behind your location choice for your photos.

For my photos I decided not to have a dramatic location, I choose to have a white background which was a classroom wall in my college as I am following the conventions of a Indie genre. They tend to have plan, simplistic background. I didn't want to use locations such as the beach, or have any bight and numerous colours because genres like Pop and RnB tend to so. I am following a Indie convention and location wasn't an important aspect to my album cover.

Ancillary Production Pitch

Ancillary Production Pitch

Mock Up Of Digipak

Mock Up Of Digipak

Annotations:
I will use an 80's typewriter-like font which will symbolise when the Indie genre was created; in the 1980's. This font also connotes authenticity and originality through portraying the idea of self-creation.This reflects my artist as he wrote all his own songs.
I will use elements of close-ups/mid-shots of my artist as this is his first album. In order to make a clear introduction of this artist to his primary audience, his appearance has to be established to his audience.
The background colour will be a dark, ashy grey which keeps the element of simplicity to the album as that is conventional of the Indie genre and also draws more focus on the artist's name and album title.
I chose to name the album 'Nostalgia' as this portrays a sense of personal experiences in the album. Considering that the artist wrote all his songs as it is conventional of the Indie genre, the album as a whole is personal to the artist and each song represents a time in his life and that is how my Indie artist wanted to introduce himself to his target audience; on a personal level, through his songs.
On the back cover, I will keep it very simple with the background being an ashy/grey colour which is also used on the front cover, with a list of his songs. This is very simple, however it is very effective and common in the Indie music industry. I will also include the copyright info, with the record label logo and bar code.

I am going to have a Black, Cream 'greyish colour scheme. I am trying to keep the Indie genre conventions by keeping it simplistic as they often choose to promote their talents not appearance . a main of my artists will also be used as he an upcoming artist. Probably have the album name on the right hand corer.

Rsearching - Analysis: Magazine Adverts That Relate To My Genre

Mock Up Of Digipak

mock album cover

I am not really familiar with photoshop and I dont really know the skills and techniques like I do in say for example Final Cut Pro but this was the second mock up I've done. The first was just practice and being able to familiarise with the software. Just like this image I will try and focus on bringing a close up of my artist and place him in the same sort of layout. However, the cartoonish theme I have used may not be a likely possibility when it comes to doing my real album cover as I was just trying get to the feel of things. I was mainly focusing on all the effects and techniques that are able to choose from and I learnt a lot of things. Anyways, my layout will practically look like this. I will have the close up/medium shot of my artist with the similar sort of style font. I will maybe not go for this effect and try keep it simple and plain. I will have my album cover in black and white in order for the cover to look more serious and noticeable. The font may stay the same as it does have an indie feel to it, although I will still have to explore the different types of fonts in order to choose the right and suitable one.

Mock Up Of Digipak

I did this in lesson as a small layout for what my real CD might look like, I think the colours go well but getting a picture of my artist on it without him looking unnatural with this background might be hard.

Past student work analysis

This work for Yasmin Feruz uses the same imagery throughout all of there products, the image of the artist with woodland on the album cover is also on the advertisement and I believe fades well into the advertisements information. throughout each piece we see the white and black colour scheme through fades and font colours. I like the inside of the album where the image carries on well to the CD and matches the front cover without seeming repetitive.

Examining Previous Students' Ancillary Products

Examining Previous Students' Ancillary Products

Group 21 -
Artist name: Romy

Strengths
Group 21 has successfully presented their new artists as well as showing a clear link through synergy. This is shown through the video and their digipak/advert. The colour scheme used in their product is very suitable for the type of genre (Pop) The connation of Pink is soft and girlish which is typically used in a Pop album cover. White and Black are always used , this will instantly catch a young audience of females. The record label logo is also on both the digipak/advertisement. They chose to use a close up of the artists face, this is significant because Romy is an upcoming and doesn't have a large fan base, this will help when it comes to promoting her. Moreover, the front suits the advertisement and Digipak because it's bubbly and not basic which gives it more style.

Weakness.
Group 21 did not have much weaknesses in my opinion , however I feel as though that in the advertisement the layout of the images are scattered and it looks a bit repetitive. too many images in one advertisement.

Group 11:
Andy Travis - Let Her Go

Strengths
The link between the video and the digipak/advert is very clear, The use of the guitar in both of the digipak/advert links to the video,  Also it suits their genre Indie and the are known for playing instruments in most of their songs. The colour scheme is basic , not too many colour are used and the audience are able to read the writing. The mid shot of the artists is used, this is to promote what he looks like as he is an upcoming artists. This suits a typically Indie album cover because  most of the time they tend to keep it very basic as they want the audience to focus more on their talent.

Weaknesses
The image of the CD cover is a bit much,I would not have an image of the artists on the CD as it is irrelevant and the CD looks a bit messy. As it is a Indie genre it's best to keep it simple and an image of the artists is already used on the album cover, there's no point using the same image again.

Analysis: Ancillary Products Of My Genre

Analysis: Ancillary Products Of My Genre
Indie/Folk Genre

Ed Sheeran '+'
Front Album Cover

Back Album Cover

Album Advertisement

Choice of font/Range of colour:
Ed Sheeran's first Pop/Folk album uses a hand-written, typewriter-like font which gives the impression that his work is authentic and tells a story of him. As this is his first album, the font suggests that his album tells a story about him. He is a folk artist. In the genre of Folk, it is common for the artists to write their own songs which means the typewriter-like font suggests that his songs are written by him and are close to him. This is all conventional of the Folk/Indie genre as the artist's musical talents tend to be strongly portrayed.
The colour scheme consists merely of the colour orange and white. Sheeran is known for his distinctive, ginger hair which justifies why they used the colour ginger for his album as it introduces him to the industry in a unique way and makes it easier for his target audience to identify him as his unique appearance has been highlighted through the production of his ancillary products.

Synergy links:
Throughout the ancillary work, an extreme close up of Ed Sheeran is used. This clearly establishes his appearance to his audience as it is his first album. The font of his name is the largest set of text, after the album title. The simplistic use of texts makes the introduction to Sheeran as an artist, clearer to his audience as his name title is clear and big, with only the album title accompanying his name.

Ben Howard 'Every Kingdom'
Front Album Cover

Back Album Cover

Album Advertisement

Choice of font/Range of colours:
This album cover has used large, bold font which is simplistic but it makes the name of the artist clear to the intended audience. The back of the album also takes up a very simplistic feel by using a plain white background with black, clear font. This reflects his authenticity as he writes his own songs and reflects the simplicity of his album as his authentic approach to making his music is conveyed through his talents of playing the guitar which he includes in all of his songs on the album. The picture of him in deep water gives the idea that this album will explore the depths of Ben Howard himself as his songs are written by him, making them very personal to him. This is very conventional of the Indie/Folk genre as the songs tend to be personal and meaningful in comparison to the songs at the top of the charts which tend to be merely disco music with meaningless lyrics.

Synergy links:
Throughout all of the ancillary products, there is a sense of simplicity portrayed, however it holds a meaningful deeper meaning. The same, simplistic font is featured, along with the release date in the album advertisement which is crucial for the introduction to the intended audience. The only additional feature featured in the album advertisement alone, is the release date. This simplistic feel draws attention to his songs rather than his appearance which is common of the Folk/Indie genre.

Researching - Analysis Of Real Ancillary Products

Photoshop Practise Of Making Ancillary Products

Photoshop practise for Ancillary work

Today we had an activity to design a fake album cover with the images that we were given

In this lesson we were shown how to layout and bring the images in. We learnt the basics of how to lock the image or a section of the image if we wanted to change things. At this moment I did not know what I was doing as you can see above. However I did familiarise as I spent more time on this. I got better and better each time I went and explored a different technique. We also learn what goes in the digipack and what doesn't so for when I am doing the real thing and I'm editing, I will know for definite what to put and what not to put on the cover.

Photoshop lesson

Today in lesson we got to try making a mock up digipak with pictures given to us on Photoshop this is my work. it was very complicated at first but I managed to produce this.
:)

Photoshop Practise Of Making Ancillary Products

Photoshop Practise Of Making Ancillary Products

As a way of showing our planning for the products of our ancillary work, we were provided with templates and told to create our own rough album cover as a way of adapting to the construction process.

We used Photoshop for the design elements and production of our fake album covers.

This gave us a clear insight of what we need to work on and how well we know about what goes into a digipak. It also taught us what to avoid doing during the editing process (not to get carried away with editing and include a lot of images- AND not to stretch the images as it looks amateurish).

I, personally, became more familiar with Photoshop and now feel more confident with using it to make my ancillary work as I was walked through how to include text and how to edit the size, font and colour of the text, how to rotate it,how to re-size an image without stretching it, etc.

Planning Ancillary products - Location choice for photos

For my front cover I chose the location of a brick wall in Angel. The reason for this was to follow the conventions of the Indie genre; making sure that the shot looked simplistic but indulging. The use of the brick wall in my opinion gives the image of my artist soulful and energetic look. From this image I can see the seriousness in the facial expression and the background is just a plain brown brick wall which conventionally challenges the perspective of the Indie genre. The clothing contrasts well with the location. The fact that he is just standing there alone leaning against the wall shows how committed he is to his music. As the indie genre focus on the talent of the artist rather than the appearance, I think the location that I have chose to take the shot works well I can use the whole picture to use as my front and back cover. I will do this so that the audience will be focused on the artist the whole time they see it. There will be nothing to lose the audiences focus off of the artist, that is why I chose this location to take my photos.

Planning Ancillary products - Overview of Costumes

Planning Ancillary products - Possible Photos

This is a possible image I would like to use for my front cover as it is really simplistic and the use of the brick wall behind the artist doesn't distract the audiences attention off the artist.

This is another image. I like this was because it is a clear close up of the artist, and you can really identify his serious facial expressions which would would be good to present.

This image pursues the conventions of the indie genre by the sort of rough look and white t-shirt.

Finally this image similar to James Blake's album cover, the blurred image can present a deep meaning of perhaps confusion or lost and ca convey that through the album cover if i chose to use this.

Planning Ancillary products - Overview of Do's and Don'ts

Do's and Don'ts

Do's

  • Make sure you have two clear fonts: One for the title and one for other information.
  • Ensure that the size of the fonts match with the convention of your genre
  • Do not over with the colours; MAXIMUM 3 colours. Make sure the colours complement the image of the artist.
  • Make sure your image is clear and is the right framing.
  • MUST BE INCLUDED in your ancillary work: copyright information, barcode, title of album cover, name of the artist, record music company, website, serial number, store logo.

Don'ts

  • YOU MUSN'T stretch the image as it will ruin it.
  • DO NOT use unnecessary effects that could ruin your work
  • Do not put in images that do not suit with your genre - make sure you do some research on other ancillary products.
  • YOU MUST NEVER cover your artist's face with text

Planning Ancillary products - Short lists

Research Ancillary products - three magazine advertisements

ANALYSIS OF THREE MAGAZINE ADVERTISEMENTS

In this magazine advertisement from the arctic monkeys we can see that the colour scheme is not too complex. The fonts are really authentic and classy and very simplistic yet elegant. For an Indie genre the font needs to have an elegant touch to it. The colour scheme is just plain black and white. This conveys how elegant the style of the band is.From this we can suggest the the type of music they play. The lay out immediately shows that this band are casual and possibly play enjoyable music. As the Indie genre follow the convention of having a meaning in their songs, the layout of the album which is right in the middle can suggest the seriousness and elegance of this band. The simplicity in this magazines allows the audience to feel attracted to it as the lay out, colour scheme, font is very well suited.

This advertisement is simple yet efficient as the colour scheme the same as the actual album colour. The colour scheme being orange white and black gives the advertisement an elegant essence. The close up image of Ed is displayed once again to enhance the moment of his debut attire. The fonts placed on the corner of the image allows the image of Ed to be focused on more. Moreover, the facial expressions show how serious he is, which could imply about his positivity to not only challenge the other indie artists but to also increase his potential fame.

As you can see there is a clear mid shot of the artist staring straight at the camera. In this advertisement the font of the artist is large and clear in order to catch the audiences eye. the colour scheme again is very simple yet elegant. The location of the shot is out in the nature somewhere, suggesting purity and peace which conveys and sybolises the nature of her music. The fonts go down from large to small giving it a nice pattern effect. The clothing she is wearing is very classy and sophisticated which therefore shows what sort of personality she has. Her appearance is very natural and neat. Her style is very Indie and not modern like other female artists who are very revealing when it comes to clothing. The seriousness in her face simply shows the confidence and power she contains and is willing to show that to the audience through her music .
