Review: My Favourite Previous Student's Video

Review: My Favourite Previous Student's Work

Mustafa, Nick, Poppy, Charon

Analysis:
This work is my favourite for multiple reasons. The use of close ups and a manipulation of speed is what makes this video brilliant. They have fulfilled all the conventions for the Indie genre. The setting and location is very conventional as they used a park with loads of trees. Many Indie music videos tend to be recorded in a setting of nature and simplicity. The main focus is on the artist which is also expected from this genre. This group has conformed to the genre conventions as they did not dismember the female's body. Laura Mulvey's theory was that many music videos portray the woman as a sexual object and the camera focuses on her body parts, rather than her face and talents. However, in this video, the focus is purely on her face and her vocal abilities.
In connection to Andrew Goodwin's theory of disjuncture, this video has no connection to the lyrics of the song. This is also very typical of the Indie genre as they tend to use the artist's/band's performance for a music video which is what this group did. With regards to Vernallis' theory, the group made wonderful use of multiple base tracks within this video which is used in most music videos, regardless of the genre.
