Laura Mulvey theorized that in a society ran by and for men, music videos were made to appeal to what they wanted to see, highlighting the parts of the female form men found most attractive and showing things from their point of view, so what they looked like.
So from this we would expect to see women being sold in music videos showing the parts men found best this was done through things Mulvey said like dismembering body parts on camera like a butt.
In this Dizzie Rascal video for " Holiday" we straight away see nothing but women in bikinis some dismembering when we're shown cleavage of one. We see as the women enters the party a man opening the door and obviously checking her out, inviting us to and showing that it's normal, men in this video can also cover up their bodies and wear more where women only wear bikinis and there's also only a few men in a sea of women. Women pop out their butts to show them off and invite us to take a look, make-out with each other to please men and don't react to men checking them out showing it's normal and okay. Finally Dizzie gets the women we've been following for the whole video into a car easily.
In Nicki Minaj's "Superbass"we see dismembering of her eyes, which they've used make-up and fake lashes to do up and make look good. In this video we see dismembering of a man's body, since a female artist we can expect this top change, however we do see more of the women presenting themselves when they're dancing on the men and Nicki pours herself with paint, breaking convention a bit, but overall women are still the main eye candy.
In this Robin Thicke vieo we see women walking and dancing around almost naked and wearing skin toned underwear to make them seem naked, in fact they have an unrated version of the video where the women are naked. The lyrics "good girl if you want it" show the male view that women should want sex. The women in this video serve the men, filling their drinks and lighting their cigars and play around for their amusement as they watch them, and the woman 2:18 coughs when having smoke blown in her face showing she can't handle manly things and is fragile while the men stay cool.

Mainstream VS. Indie
Mainstream VS. Indie
One Direction (Mainstream)
Lanterns In The Lake (Indie)
Questions:
1. What do you think are the main advantages and disadvantages to being signed to an independent label?
Advantages: The artist gets more artistic freedom and choice with his/her art and is less likely to be manipulated as there is less demand from fans. Another advantage is that the artist is less likely to be dropped by the label because there are lower expectations with independent labels, meaning they can take more risks with artists and are not pressured to drop an artist from the label if something doesn't go according to plan.
Disadvantages: Low finance means they cannot afford merchandise and rely merely on advertising through the internet which may restrict the amount of fans they gain.
2. What do you think are the main advantages and disadvantages to being signed to a mainstream label?
Advantages: Mainstream labels have a lot of money behind them and therefore can afford to sell their artists through OOH advertising and buying merchandise, etc. as well as using social networking sites to reach out to the fans.
Disadvantages: Lack of artistic freedom and choice. An artist can record a whole album, only to have it not released by the label. E.g. Nas's album.
3. How important do you think merchandise and ancillary products are to the success of the band and to the audiences?
I believe they are extremely important to the success of an artist or band. The merchandise is crucial in reaching out to your target audience. The merchandise has to accurately suit the characteristics and personalities of the fan base. E.g. it would not make sense for a band from the Rock genre, to release pink duvets with pastel colours because their fan base are highly unlikely to purchase such things.
4. How many different ways can fans of the bands find out information about them?
Through their official websites, social networking sites (Facebook page, Twitter feed, Instagram, etc.), Wikipedia.
5. Would you rather be signed to a mainstream or independent label? Explain why.
The answer to this question all depends upon how the person defines success. They may view success financially or artistically. If they measure success according to how much money and fame they gain, then mainstream would be ideal as they have the adequate finances to market the artist and their art. Whereas, if they measure their success according to how many people actually listen to their music, then an indie label would be perfect as they focus more on the distribution of the music to the fans. They focus less on what they're getting in return for it.

Analysis of Music Videos: Costume, Setting, Location
Analysis of Music Videos: Costume, Setting, Location
Analysis:
One Direction - Best Song Ever (Pop)
Analysis:
Mumford and Sons - Hopeless Wanderer (Folk Rock)
Analysis:
Questions:
1. What do you notice about the amount of costumes in the videos?
The amount of costume changes within a video refers to the genre of the music video as all genres have different qualities. E.g. in a Pop music video, it is expected that there will be multiple costume changes as the genre is based on appearance, not just musical talent, like Indie, or Folk.
2. What differences are there between the genres in terms of the amount and style of the costumes?
As mentioned before, some genres are more appearance-based, meaning that multiple costume changes within their genre is expected as it is not all about the music and talents they have. Unlike, indie and folk which are genres that are purely based upon the artist's/band's musical abilities so they usually just show the artists performances in music videos.
3. Compare the use of setting and location between the three genres - what similarities and differences can you spot?
There are mainly differences between the three genres I chose to analyse. R'n'B uses the setting and location as a symbol of the wealthy lifestyle the artist leads. Whereas, Folk Rock use the simplest form of natural setting and location so that the audience's attention cannot be diverted away from the band's performance. Pop's use of setting and location was used to portray the band's wild side and to portray the band's capabilities of being young and having fun.
4. How significant is the use of props in the genres that you analysed?
The use of props is extremely significant within the genres. Folk Rock's use of instruments as props is the central focus of the whole music video, therefore without the props this video would not function the way it does. R'n'B's use of props is, again, for the purposes of showing the artist's lavish lifestyle and wealth. For Pop, the use of props are to convey the band's fun and wild side as they smash computers and rip up paperwork.

Review: My Favourite Previous Student's Work
Mustafa, Nick, Poppy, Charon
Analysis:
This work is my favourite for multiple reasons. The use of close ups and a manipulation of speed is what makes this video brilliant. They have fulfilled all the conventions for the Indie genre. The setting and location is very conventional as they used a park with loads of trees. Many Indie music videos tend to be recorded in a setting of nature and simplicity. The main focus is on the artist which is also expected from this genre. This group has conformed to the genre conventions as they did not dismember the female's body. Laura Mulvey's theory was that many music videos portray the woman as a sexual object and the camera focuses on her body parts, rather than her face and talents. However, in this video, the focus is purely on her face and her vocal abilities.
In connection to Andrew Goodwin's theory of disjuncture, this video has no connection to the lyrics of the song. This is also very typical of the Indie genre as they tend to use the artist's/band's performance for a music video which is what this group did. With regards to Vernallis' theory, the group made wonderful use of multiple base tracks within this video which is used in most music videos, regardless of the genre.

Laura Mulvey's Theory
Laura Mulvey's Theory
(Representation)
"In a world ordered by sexual imbalance, pleasure in looking has been split between active/male and passive/female. The determining male gaze projects its fantasy onto the female figure which is styled accordingly." - 1992
In other words: In a world ordered by gender inequalities, men search for pleasure in women, while women are simply for the male gaze. Therefore, whatever image the man has of the female, is then projected onto her, whether she agrees with the representation or not.
In Laura Mulvey's analysis of music videos, she discusses that women are 'dismembered' in all forms of the media. There is a central focus, not on women but a focus on parts of their body. She argues that this is responsible for some women's focus and obsession with specific parts of their bodies (bums, legs, stomach, etc). She argues that men, however, are shown as a whole.

Ed Sheeran - Give Me Love
Analysis:
This video deepens the meaning of the lyrics. This is portrayed towards the end of the video. The main actress within the video plays a cupid-like character who has the power to make anyone fall in love with whoever she desires. However, we gradually see her character deteriorate as she becomes ill in the sense that she begins to bleed and eventually dies in the end. This deepens the meaning of the lyrics as it connotes the idea that one may crave love because it is an amazing thing, however love can also cause hurt and emotional stress to the point where it could kill you (break your heart).
Illustration:
Pharrell Williams - Happy
Analysis:
This video clearly demonstrates the lyrics. People within the music video 'clap along' to the song as instructed through the lyrics. They dance in a very 'happy' and enthusiastic way with the intention of making the audience feel the same way when they listen to this uplifting song.
Disjuncture:
Rihanna - Stay
Analysis:
This video has almost no connection with the lyrics of the song as the lyrics speak of wanting someone to 'stay'. Whereas, the video simply illustrates the artist in a bath tub singing to the camera. The only way this video may have little connection is if you were to see it in a way where the artist is physically vulnerable as she lays in the bath tub naked which may symbolise her emotional vulnerability as she gives the audience an insight of her feelings of desperation and sadness.

Lessons In June: What Was Learnt
We learnt the definition and function of a music video.
"A music video or song video is a short film integrating a song and imagery, produced for promotional or artistic purposes."
We also learnt that the production of a music video utilizes a very different structure to TV drama, which is what we researched throughout AS.
Different camera and editing techniques are used in music videos as it is not a film, and therefore, the visual representation has to be made clear without the use of dialogue. Although, some music videos do feature dialogues either at the beginning or end of the video.
We learnt that music videos gain no money as they are not brought. They are simply made for the purpose of the artist's/band's popularity and fame. A music video can at times lure people in more than the actual song, which is how the artist gains fans.
Overall, a music video helps the artist's singles and albums to increase in sales through raising the artist's popularity.
The purpose of a music video is to promote the artist and their songs. This is done by emphasising the artist's talents visually, keeping the audience engaged. This is also done by making the song more memorable for the audience.
Lastly, we discovered the first ever music video to be made and released.

Research for Music Video: Reflection on Progress
My blogging this year has resulted to me gaining more and more knowledge and confidence. This year I have blogged more freely and easily as last year taught me and has given me experience of what it felt like to have a blog in which I had to keep updating with new information and research. The new formats that I have discovered from AS to A2 has given me the opportunity to use those new technologies and present my research on my blog.
- I would like to improve my organisations; to not leave my blogging till last minute and try to get every single blog done in massive detail.
- Also I need to discover more ICT and new technologies as there are many ways to present my blogs in order to make it visually entertaining and not boring.
- Another thing I want to do is that I have to look back on all of my blogs even after I've finished them to make sure that I have enough detail and I've met all the criteria.
Research for Music Video: Synergy
Artist:
Meek Mill
Album cover name:
Dreamchasers 3
The key features In this album is the Artists face which is combined with half a Lions face. This is a very strong and visually appealing cover as it stands out more. The colour scheme in this is secluded as the whole background is dark and in the middle we see a mix of virtually the same tone of colour to present Meek Mill. As of the title being called 'Dreamchasers' you can tell by the darkness behind meek mill with the skeletons and the building is in black and grey to possibly show a past and the colour in the middle to show us that he's made it through the pain chasing his dream. The font is stylized to be small as the artist wanted to promote himself more than the name of the title by
covering the whole cover with his face.
This is the first music video to present Meek Mills Album. Towards the end of the song there is a promotion of the album showing the full cover and where you can get it.
Due to him being a rapper, the album cover has to evidently show why it's better than any previous ones like 'dreamchasers 1 and 2'. The cover shows real seriousness and excitement for the fans or anyone to be interested in listening or buying the album.
Promotion:
Meek Mill also signed a deal with trainers company Puma who also do their job to promote
themselves and to promote the artist by including the logo in covers and music vidoes.
This is a commercial for his other album Dreams and Nightmare which was focused more than Dreamchasers. The video is a commercial advertising the puma shoes and advertising his songs and himself as a whole.

Research for Music Video: Skills Audit
How have my skills in research developed since AS?
- My skills have developed drastically as I have had more experience and given more and new work which has widened my exploration in terms of research.
- Using new formats has been a major development as I have figured out new ways to present and tackle my work.
- Through my experience in AS I have gained more knowledge and confidence in how I present my work and what sort of contextual information I need to insert in.
- I am now using moving technologies rather than just posting written research on my blog, such as prezi, emaze, animato etc.
- Overall my skills in research has helped and guided me to not also become a better blogger, it has also helped me with building up my coursework as a whole.
RESEARCH - 50 Second Music Video Planning
Planning
The song we have chosen is called 'I'm Not The Only One' by Sam Smith featuring ASAP Rocky.
We have planned to record our video in black and white as this connotes a sense of melancholy which will be simultaneously portrayed through the song itself. The mixed genres of Soul/Rap/Pop have made it particularly difficult to decide upon a location and costumes and content as the conventions of these genres differ from one another. However, we have concluded that we will make our video look quite old fashioned which comes from the conventions of the Soul genre.
Costume:
- Montel (ASAP Rocky) will be dressed in all black clothing with a bucket hat as we feel this is a clear example of urban clothing which is part of the Rap genre conventions.
- Durim (Sam Smith) will be dressed in hughstreet, accessible attire which is what a Pop artists costume usually consists of.
BASE TRACKS - AGAINST THE WALL, INDIVIDUAL WALK DOWN THE STREET, CLOSE UPS OF EACH ARTIST.

Lip-Syncing practical:
In this lesson we learnt how to Lip-Sync a music video. We were given the original sound of the singers voice and a variety of different shots of the video. We were asked to make our own video using the Lip-syncing tutorial we had with the media teacher and he showed us how to perfect the timing of the lip-sync and how we could make the different shots go with the beat of the song.
Research for Music Video: Analysing costume, setting and location in music videos
Video 1:
Cold play - The Scientist (Indie)
In this video there is only two costume changes, as this video is Indie. The genre itself doesn't focus specifically on what the artists wears, it focuses on the artists talent.
The costume links to verse-chorus-verse as throughout the video we see him in the same white top as the whole video is in reverse so we see him travelling backwards to 'the start'. You see him changing his costume at 2:38 as the video has a strong story line which is played in reverse. Also the setting and locations are very simple and not too complex, just like the costumes in this video. The Indie genre mainly focuses on the artist and the story line they produce.
There are only four different locations: graffiti, urban setting, streets, train tracks, and mountains. The locations relate to the indie genre as it is simple and the locations are very open.
Video 2:
In this video there are 6 outfit changes. As this is a rap video it is obvious that the artist would wear multiple outfits. Rappers or Hip Hop artist not only like to sound good but they also want to look good so they make more of an effort on costume.
The artist shows off his different outfits to show the audience his style in clothing and also because they suit with the setting and location as it gives the video a more urban look. Also the setting is located in an island so the artists wears very bright colours like his floral shirt. His last costume change is a sweater top with a TDE font logo. This is to promote the company that hes signed to : Top Dawg Entertainment.
Video 3:
In this video there are no costume changes, the lead singer is wearing a leather jacket with a turtle neck jumper. The genre for arctic monkeys is indie rock so the costumes have to follow the dark vintage style conventions. The Arctic Monkeys bring back the vintage days as you can see from the style of his hair and the clothes that the lead singer is wearing. The locations however are kept in the same era as they have based it in London streets.
From having done research, costume and locations vary between the style of genre. Having seen different genre's like rap, indie, rock, I can now tell why costumes and locations can be very important. For instance, rap and RnB costume and locations are a major effect on how the video is presented. The use of costume changes and different locations are used to present them as very wealthy so that the viewers can tell the life that they live. In contrast, genre's such as indie and rock portray emotion rather then looking presentable and wealthy. The genre focuses more on the talent of the artist rather than what they wear and what location is behind them.

Research for Music Video: Review of my favourite previous student video
11. Yacine, Andrew, Ryan, Mazlum.
This video follows the conventions of a typical indie love song. The story line is simple yet so professional in the way its visually presented. The chosen locations suit very well with the song as it is portraying feelings of missing someone. Therefore choosing very opened and deserted locations gives it a sad depressing effect to the viewers. Also the clothing and props corresponds to the conventions of an indie genre as the clothing is very formal. Furthermore, the use of the guitar gives the video more of an effect as it makes the video more entertaining and makes the student look like a real artist.

using a base track and splitting it into various amounts of shots.
We had to look at the audio to match the music to the marker , this was to make sure that i edit from the right place. Also i had to make sure that the lip sync matches the music so it flows evenly.
We added all of the base tracks and cut the bits we didn't want, also i had to make sure all of the markers matched up to make it easier for me to know when to use the razor tool to cut videos.

Research for Music Video : Laura Mulvey's Theory on representation:
Laura Mulvey's Theory on representation:
Laura Mulvey's theory demonstrated that the idea of women being used in music/film was 'that the cinema position the audience as male'. This basically means that a music video with women is meant to please and entertain the men.
Laura is a British Feminist Theorist and believed that women in their appearance are coded for a strong visual and erotic impact which implies "to be looked at ness".
An Example of Laura Mulvey's Theory is: Lady Gaga - Telephone ft. Beyoncé
This video shows how men would watch and admire at Lady Gaga and all the other nude provocative females as the way that they were 'Dressed', which is really revealing and very seductive. The females show a lot of flesh and dance in a seductive manner. As this video mostly includes females, this makes it even more provocative for the males to enjoy and gaze at Lady Gaga and her backup dancers. Her appearance and all the other female participants is quite appealing to the audience too which is why the strong visual and erotic impact implies "to be looked at ness", thus we gaze at her and the other females as they are objectified and controlled.
Another Example is: Niki Minaj - Anaconda
This music video has a range of very attractive and seductive females including Niki herself, with nudity revealing to the fullest extent without the video being too inappropriate. The sound of a males voice is heard in the background to show that the women are giving the men the desire that they would want. Laura's theory to women being 'looked at ness' is really shown in this video as we see a lot flesh and a lot of close ups and different camera angles to allow the women to be admired at in every angle possible. If you go on the video and go to the minutes 3:25 you will then see a scene where Niki and the male in a very large spaced area where the male is sitting on a chair. The seductive scene shows the female using her body parts to pleasure and entertain the male. The fact that the scene lasts for - 1 minute 43 seconds just shows how much time is given for the female Niki to show off and convey her erotic skills to visually entertain a large male audience and also convince other young females to idolize her.

RESEARCH - Andrew Goodwin's Theroy
Andrew Goodwin
Andrew Goodwin’s theory about music is that traditional
narrative analyse don’t really apply to pop videos. There are number of reasons
for this, also he believes that pop videos approach narrative from and
different angle to novel and films.
1.
Pop music are built around songs
2.
The pop video uses the singer both as narrator
and as a character
3.
The singer often looks directly at the camera
Pop videos reply on reception. Often the videos repeat images in the way the song repeats choruses or lines. Pop songs and therefore videos do have a form of closure and ending. The 3 minute single that a video is based on must end and this often reflected in structure of the music.
Some videos are autonomous from
the music they spring from; sometimes the video provides a visual pleasure that
encourages repeated viewing which therefore promotes the music. Sometimes the
videos might be promoting other commodities such as films. There are three
types of relations between song and videos; illustration, amplification and disjuncture
illustration :
illustration is commonly used in music videos ; such as Survivor - Destiny's Child with Lyrics , Pink Family Portrait.
"When you was just a youngin' your looks were so
precious"
In this song a flash back was used to when the girl was a
little girl showing how precious , innocent and
vulnerable she was. if follow the story line closely the man
behind her takes of his belt and physically starts forcing her to be quite ; this suggests that he was about to rape her, which leads to her not knowing 'how to love ' because she was emotional damaged from a young age.
illustration :
illustration is commonly used in music videos ; such as Survivor - Destiny's Child with Lyrics , Pink Family Portrait.
This video of Lil Wayne- How To Love is an example for
Illustration.
This song fits the category because the video tells the story of
the lyrics. For example ; in 1.21 seconds when Lil Wayne says
Amplification:
Amplification happens when the video introduces new meanings that do not contradict with the lyrics but add layers to the meaning.
An example of an amplification song is; Beyoncé - If I was a boy
Disjuncture; this is where there is little connection between the lyric and video or where the video contradict the lyric.
An example of an disjuncture song is ; Michael Jackson - Man In The Mirror
This video is an example of disjuncture because the video and the lyric do not comply. the song is about talking man in the mirror and making a change, however in the video we don't see a single image of anyone in the mirror, however the video contains a number of historical events. In this video Michael Jackson plays the narrator.
RESEARCH - What Is The Function Of A Music Video
What
Is The Function Of A Music Video?
The main function of a music video is to promote the artist , single and the album, as the artist is the main focus to gain money for the record label...
Music videos are also used to for representation. Music artists use videos to represent themselves, For example some female artists such as Nicki Minaj represents her self as a sex object. This has become her unique selling point.
Another function of a music video is to provide the viewer with a better understanding of the song so they engage with it visually and audibly, this is achieved through a performance or a story. Moreover, it's to entertain the view by highlighting the talent of the artist.

Research for Music Video: Carol Vernalis research
Carol Vernallis : studied editing and camerawork and summarised her own findings of what a music video appears to be.
- She found that continuity editing is broken in order to draw attention to what is on the screen
- Jump cuts are often used
- Edits are used to be obvious in terms of transitions and special effects
- A base track is the main part of the music video to give it structure and frequently appears throughout the music video
- Camera stays in sync with the music
For special effects, this video of Dappy in a world of his own to portray his emotions.
