RESEARCH - Carol Vernallis

Carol Vernallis

Carol Vernallis studied editing and camerawork closely in music videos.
She observed that edits in music videos come much more frequently than in film, that many stand out as disjuncture.

One of her main points were that ;
  • The usual rules of 'continuity' editing are broken I  order it draw attention to what is on screen;
  • Edits may be obvious to draw attention to themselves , such as wipes and special effects added.
  • jump cuts are often  used.
  • A master shot ( base track ) is frequently used to give the video a structure.
  • Camera may move in time with the music

Mark Ronson & The Business Intl - The Bike Song

Example of a Slow Motion
When the boy in the re jacket  is walking alongside the road and singing slow motion is used,  also when he comes out the shop and tries to throw the paper in the bin, he misses, slow motion  is used to show where the paper landed.( on the floor )
Multiple use of close - ups is used when he first notices the bike and he stares at it , straight after that there is a cross cut to the artists making eye contact with camera, he's singing to the camera at this point.

Rizzle Kicks - Lost Generation

The base track is used in the 'Big Brother' screen as it was filmed from one shot/angle throughout the video. During post-production some shots were cut off and the rest were used.  Slow motion ( 03.37 ) is used when the one of the artists is running away with the black and the little boys is chasing after him.
