Synergy is good as they have front - Black & white goes with the feel of the song
Good research of target audience.
The idea of costume being very casual and boys next door , it fits the genre. Clear narrative idea.
Post production was clear .
Even better if..
We need to have our artist face on the front cover of the Digipak as he is a upcoming artists
Risk assessment needs to be more detailed

Draft Digipak
'Canopy Climbers'
Album Cover Name : 'Outcome'
The reason I used this as a background is because it is a simple way of showing how the artist is trying recover from his past and enter a new life. The long everlasting path is his journey to happiness. I chose the name of the album 'Outcome' because this album has a list of songs that convey his journey and questioning himself about how things will turn out for him.
Pitch: Digipak - Lorita Abazi
Digipak and Ancillary Products
Album Cover 'Nostalgia'
The reason I thought 'Nostalgia' would be a good title for the album is because Indie artist's tend to write their own lyrics and make songs based on meaningful things and personal experiences, so the name Nostalgia indicates a sense of reminisce.
I chose not to feature the artist on the cover as the Indie genre's central focus is on the artist's talent and music abilities, rather than the artist's appearance. The thinking bubble relates to the artist's sense of reminisce and thinking over his past life experiences- good and bad ones.

Pitch: Evaluation - Lorita Abazi
Evaluation - How will you approach the evaluation questions?
Evaluation Question 1:
Audience feedback: I think MindMeister would be perfect for this blogging task. I think it would be ideal to create a brainstorm based on how our group have decided to avoid our faults and mistakes for next time. And then another brainstorm on how we achieved our strengths and how to better our strengths to become even more effective. I could also create a separate brainstorm for each area: mise-en-scene, sound, editing, camera work.
Evaluation Question 2:
Specific audience feedback on ancillary products: I believe Animoto would be best for this as we are able to embed short videos of mini interviews we will record with the target audience of the Indie genre, talking about what they thought of our ancillary products and what we could have done to improve it.
Evaluation Question 3:
Final Progress Review Blog: Camtasia would be perfect for this task as I am able to embed text, audio, pictures and videos to thoroughly express my points. And I think on camera, people will get an accurate understanding of how I genuinely felt about my blog and they will be able to capture my true feelings of blogging in general.
Evaluation Question 4:
Final Blogging Task: A Slid.es presentation would be good for this task as I could portray a thorough and personal reflection of my approach to blogging and how I could have improved it.

Synergy
The one key visual element we will be using to link our video together with our ancillary products will be the use of font.
We will include credits in our music video of the artist's name and the title of the song. This writing which will be added through post-production, will be in the same font as the writing on the front of the album cover- possibly courier, which is typewriter-like font.
Example: Daft Punk
Album Teaser Trailer 'Random Access Memories'
Album Cover Name 'Random Access Memories'
As you can see, they use the same font in order to establish a clear connection between the two. We will also do this in order to convey a clear similarity and so that they compliment each other.
We have also considered using black and white on the ancillary products and music video as we think it shows a clear connection between the two products and they will compliment each other that way.
Example: Wretch 32
Album Cover 'Black & White'
Single Cover 'Forgiveness'
The black and white filter draws an instant attention to the connection between the two as they both have a sketched/black and white look. This makes the products unique within themselves so they look different to other artist's album covers but have an obvious connection between one another.

Pitch - Industry - Montel Powell
I believe our artist Blake Whitemen would probably be signed to an independent small label, like Bella Union which Lanterns on the lake is signed to, they're a small label and take on lots of Indie rock bands, with other genres like folk, space rock and dream pop, which are all rather underground genres of music. The song would be available online through our artists website and Itunes as artists signed with Bella Union are on Itunes. But our artists music probably wouldn't be available in stores as he's still small, independant and not well known.
An independent label will give our artist the chance to be creative in his work, rather than doing whatever's going to bring in the most money and having a bunch of people on his back telling him what to do. looking at the other groups and genres they belong to signed Bella union we see that they have a lot of hybrid different genres, showing that they're a label which don't mind allowing their artists to do what they feel and try something different.
Our artists music would be accessible online than in store as they're a small time artist and it's easier for them to put their music up online to their own websites. Looking at bands like Lantern on the lake I noticed that they also sell their music on vintage vinyl's on their website which I believe appeals to fans of the indie genre as they like to be different and vintage, However this does seem like it could cost a lot, I read £1500 for 500 vinyl's so for a new artists this probably wouldn't be an option.

Pitch - post production - Montel Powell
So far for post production we've been thinking of using slow-motion, black and white or desaturation, and maybe small flashes.
Slow motion: We wanted to use slow motion as it's a sad song which becomes slow during verses we thought this would reflect the lyrics and tempo of the song.
Black and White or desaturation: We differed on this technique unsure whether to go completely black and white in the video, desaturise the video slightly or do neither, we all think that whichever of these three choices we do decide to go with will go well with the alternative genre and the song video, but it's something we may have to decide later on or see which looks best.
Small Flashes may be used to bring attention to cuts in the video, this is cause during the story of the video we plan on showing flashbacks of the lost relationship, these flashes are meant to indicate it.
Here are two video from the same alternative genre which have slow motion and black and white effects, showing that it is not unusual for us to follow these conventions for this genre.

Pitch - Storyboard for Music video - Durim:
This storyboard drawing is a rough view of what we want our music video to look like. However, we will want to iclude many shots so there would be some extra edging on the placement of where which shot should be. This storyboard is also going to be used as a guidence to finilizing our video where we can add and construct new ideas on to the storyboard to only make our video even better.
The * sign is where all of our basetrack shots will be.

Pitch - Audience 2 - Lorita Abazi
Audience 2 - What would a big fan of this genre expect to find in your video?
Pitch - Audience 1: Who Is Your Core And Wider Audience? - Lorita Abazi
Audience 1: Who Is Your Core And Wider Audience?
Core Audience:
The primary target audience for our artist is British, young males from the ages of 16 to 25.
Males of this category will be able to relate to the artist's accessible attire as it clearly portrays a causal, boy-next-door look which males can easily replicate as the clothing is typically found on the high street.
How will our video attract our core audience?
Our artist will be wearing typical, Indie artist attire; t-shirt, checkered, jeans and black trainers. The attire of the artist will immediately attract the male audience who share a similar fashion sense with the artist.
The narrative of the music video will also appeal to our core audience. With regards to our core audience being predominantly teenage boys, most of them would have already gone through or are going through a break-up, therefore they will be able to tie their feelings to the song and video as the video and lyrics describe their emotions for what they're going through/have gone through.
How will our video attract our wider audience?
As the Indie genre was first created in the late 80's/early 90's, the males who were teenagers then and enjoyed the genre are likely to still follow Indie artist's and listen to their music. So for that purpose, the wider audience would be attracted to our video through the liking of the song. Also, the narrative of the video symbolises a sense of reminisce for the wider male audience as they can reminisce on past experiences of when they were teenagers, creating a feeling of nostalgia.

Pitch - Initial idea - Durim
Initial Idea
Ideas for our video has simply come from looking at a variety of different Indie based songs. We wanted to present the theme of depression in our video so weve therefore looked at slow and soft songs that could have similar thought to our video.
The first video we looked at isnt really an Indie song, however the video gave us an idea for our base track
Dappy - Good Intentions
The reason we liked this video is because for our basetrack we want the artist to either be walking towards the camera or along it. Also the video is moving in slow motion but the lyp-syncing is on time with the song. We want our artist in the base track to be moving in slow motion in order to present a depressed atmoshpere as he will be walking along primrose hill conveying his emotions to the camera.
This is another video we looked at as we felt it portrayed a depressed narrative.
Ed Sheeran - The A Team
We liked this video as it looked very gloomy and dark and you can tell what the story about this girl is. In our video we want to use the similar assets, so emotional expressions, possibly clothing, locations etc. Also in our video we will have a lot of shots in slow motion to show the sadness and heartbreak.
Pitch - Concept - Durim
Our music video will 'Climb' up to your expectations with every shot and every lyric to make you feel the artists emotion.

Planning: Initial Ideas for digipak and advertisement
Ideas for Digipak and Advertisement
For my digipak I will try not to make the cover look too complex. I will be focusing less on primary colours and go for more of a dark gloomy colour in order for my artist to be portrayed as an indie Artist.
Here are some examples of what I could use for my Album cover and for my advertisement:
In this cover we can see that the face of the artist is manipulated and combined with an eagles face. |
I could also use this style but use the picture of my artist with a picture of him clear and then maybe use this style to have a picture of him in all black. This could give my digipak a clear sense of what the artist is about. Indie genres are focused more about meanings. Images that are manipulated can be seen from the audience that they're simply trying to portray an emotion through their songs.
However, I can also go for the simple digipak and advertisement and just have my artist clear in an angle and pose that would sense an emotion when the audience see it. Sam Smith album cover is the perfect solution and example of what I could use for my digipak and advertisement.
In my digipak I will be looking to have something similar to this, but possibly have a darker background and maybe include an object or extra image to show the essence powerfulness of the artist and the songs that he produces.
Planning: Analysis of 3 music videos that have influenced our planning.
Analysis of 3 different videos that have influenced our final post production:
Coldplay - The Scientist
I've chosen this video because mainly the genre is 'Indie' and the video focuses more on the artist rather than the attraction of locations and narratives like in other genres. This has influenced our planning production as the video looks simple and not complex yet looks very organised and entertaining. The shots where the camera is following the movement of the singer had influenced us as we too have focused more on the singer rather than whats around him. The simplicity of the locations being in the streets, park, woods allowed us to follow this criteria as our genre of the song is indie therefore this video was a top contender for influencing me to produce our song.
Sam Smith - Stay with me
Another song related to our genre and style that influenced our final production. The close up and medium shots are repeated to focus specifically on the artist rather then whats around him. The tracking of the artist is done smoothly and constantly again to prioritize the singer. Also the clothing and locations have been a great influence as we've seen that everyday locations like streets and roads can be made to look very appealing and professional. Furthermore, the filter is another which had given us an idea to use in our video, saturating the light colours and lowering the brightness so the video has a cold sort of gloomy effect.
John Newman - Cheating
Lastly, this video consists of a lot of slow motion, blurred out and then focused shots which looks very entertaining to watch. The slow motion is normally used to show the narrative and show the singer when he wasn't singing just so it allowed more time to focus on the artist. The blurred and focused shots influenced us as we want to have the audience to have that excitement and thrill to see our artist.

Planning: Analysis of digipak/CD for our final song
As Canopy Climbers are an independent label their album cover is not too complex as we see a background that has a main bold colour. The pattern in the background gives the album a 3D rudimental effect showing how simplicity can also make the album cover look nice.
Also the colour blue can also be seen as a symbolisation of trust, loyalty, wisdom in which the artist could be portraying through his songs.
This is the 'single' cover of the song that we've chosen by Canopy Climbers. Its different from the actual album cover itself, changing the colour scheme and style. The colour scheme follows a brown/Cream correction and has a background of a map but is blurred out giving it a sort of lost maybe possibly broken effect.

PLANNING - Analysis Of Original Video.
Canopy Climber - Stuck
This song doesn't have a music video which was very helpful for us because we were able to come up with our ideas and it was easier to visualize our own music video. This means that our music video will be original as we do not have a music video to look back at, Furthermore we were able to listen to the lyrics in depth to try and get an idea , which means we wouldn't have video that looks similar yo ours and it's completely new.

Planning - Our Finial Song
Finial Song
Canopy Climbers - Stuck
Firstly, We choose this song because from the moment we heard it we pictured so many ideas and had a narrative for the music video. Also in this song contains one male singer , it fits perfectly because one of our group member which was a boy really wanted to in the music video. We liked the genre of the song and in terms of learning the lyrics is was easy because it was a basic song , the content behind the song really touched us because there was so much we can show through the music video we would produce.
Planning: Analysis of original video, how will ours differ?
Thankfully, our song choice does not have an original video which has therefore made it much more easier for us to visualize our own video. Having an original video would've possibly affected our ideas as our minds would think back to the original video and we'd feel like we wouldn't match the same quality.
So in this case we listened to the song over and over again, coming up with different ideas and constructions that we could use to suit the song. Now we have come up with our own idea for a song that doesn't have a video which would allow the audience to not judge as much as if it had an original video. The lyrics had given us a visual idea of the artist singing alone, depressed and showing a lot of emotion with a back up story to show why he's hurt.
Reflection on Progress
Reflection on Progress
- I believe I have grown a lot since last year.
- I am more aware of how to make my research appear visually interesting and I provide my presentations with the adequate and in-depth research, with the use of references from current artists.
- I have ensured to use a wider variety of ICT, such as Slid.es,Timetoast, Animato, Mindmeister, etc.
- However, I do believe I need to branch out a little more and take risks in terms of using vlogs to present my research.
- So far, I would hope that my detail of blogging is at a 9 out of 20, for my first section of research.
I would like to improve my organisation. I sometimes let time control me, instead of me controlling time and doing work when I have to. I tend to leave blogs to last minute which is not convenient.
I would also like to improve on different varieties of ICT I am using. A lot of the ICT I use are very PowerPoint-like which may become a little boring.
I need to use ICT that needs videos and photos to illustrate my ideas and research, instead of words.
Also, I believe I should go over my blogs a little more, even once I finished them to ensure that they are correct and that the research makes sense and is relevant.

I believe my skills in research have developed since AS.
My research in AS mainly focused on different representations within TV Drama. I also had to research and show examples of different conventions within teen films, such as particular character stereotypes and locations.

Evaluation of Lip Sync Project
Evaluation of Lip Sync Project
Strengths:
- The special effects done through post-production (black and white filter) gave a real and mellow effect to the music video, which worked well with the lyrics of the song as they, too, are melancholic lyrics.
- The manipulation of speed (slow motion) in the end, emphasises the smile of Durim's face, giving an impression of nostalgia as the artist reminisces on times when he was genuinely happy.
- Good use of base tracks. Base tracks are crucial within music videos, regardless of the genre.
- Editing done to the beat of the song. This is also conventional within music videos to make the beat more memorable, audibly as much as visually.
- Structure and positioning of the artist's was well thought through. For example, when Montel finishes his rap and steps back, allowing Durim to come forward and become the main focus of the music video as he sings his part.
- Confident performance. The performance done by Montel and Durim was very confident and therefore, gave our video more convincing emotion.
- No use of close-ups. Close ups are crucial within music videos. It would have been perfect to include a close-up just after Montel walks back onto the wall for Durim to perform. It would have given the audience a clearer introduction to Durim.

PLANNING - Analysis Of The Digipak/CD
(Although it says by Montel Powell, I made this Prezi using his account. i )
Carol Vernallis theory
Carol Vernallis studied editing and camera work in music videos compared to film noticing that edits
came more frequently in music videos than in film or TV she noted some main points which were that:
The usual continuity editing found in TV and film products were not in music videos, which she believed was to show draw attention to what was on screen
Edits might be obvious to draw attention to themselves using special effects
jump cuts were used more frequently
a base track was often used where the artists performed which gave the video structure
and finally the camera may move in time with the video
To demonstrate these areas I've chosen to analyse Freddie Gibbs' "Deeper" video
We see jump cuts at 1:42 to 1:44 to get a closer look at the artists ex girlfriend. slow motion is used a lot through this video I took note of it at 2:07 when the artist starts fighting the man leaving the barber shop, and the video is put in reverse to bring attention to the fact that this was just an idea.
and Denzel Curry's "Threatz"
in this video we see that the camera moves very slow at the beginning of the video as the beat is quite and just opening. We see a base track of the artist Denzel Curry is wearing a beanie with a boy on a quad bike behind him and another when he's got a large group of boys behind him. And of course the video's colours have been distorted which gets stronger from the beginning.

overview of work on costume, setting and location
For looking into costume, settings and props in different genres music videos I decided to look at Rap, Rock and Indie Rock
Before looking at the videos I had the idea that the Rock and Indie Rock videos would have less and no so flashy costume and location changes or props as in Rap and Hip-Hop it is usual for artists to show of their wealth through the things they put in their videos for example designer clothes or cars, and to show where they came from (a rough area) and/or where their fame has got them (a rich area). whilst Rock and Indie Rock musicians and their fans don't favour these things as much.
For a rap video I've chosen to look at HS87's "Grindin' My whole life" the main rapper in their group in particular Hit-Boy
In this video we see Hit-boy change costumes 4 times each time wearing fashionable clothes which carry the groups insignia, the costumes are meant to show he's fashionable. They show their wealth through the cars they have in the video, but also that they're from the hard side of life with guns and bulletproof vests. The locations change only to different areas in their area where we presume they grew up and lived, a rough area they show this through there choice of locations like when they show a burnt down house, this shows that they have a good idea of the area and are just like the people who lived there.
For my Indie Rock video I looked at Alt-J'S "Breezeblocks"
In this video we see there are no costume changes and there's no focus on them, the video tells a story and we never see the musicians, the performers in the video wear very casual clothes. throughout the video the story takes place in one apartment, everything in this video including props is meant to make the people in the video seem normal or go with the story told in the video.
For my Rock video I picked Slipknot "Spit it out"
In this video we only see one costume and setting changes as the band re-make scenes from the Shining movie. In this video they look more at the fans showing the deeper connection rock bands have with their supporters. We also see each member of the band wearing their own individual mask which they wear at all of their performances.

Research - Analysis Of Costume, Setting And Location In Music Video
I will be analysing 3 different music videos from different genres. I will be focusing on the use of setting costume and props.
Rick Ross - Aston Martin Music ft. Drake, Chrisette Michele ( HipHop/RnB)
Use of Costume.
In this Music Video i am focusing on Rick Ross, there are 5 costume changes , He appears in a Red T-shirt with a White top while he's driving, then when he's at the beach with Drake he's wearing a White T-shirt with, sun Glasses, White Bottoms and a Gold Watch, the gold symbolise his wealth and riches and the colour white is associated with light, goodness, innocence and cleanliness. He the appears at what looks a bar wearing a white top again navy blue bottoms , a navy blue hat, navy blue jacket , white shoes and a gold chain around his neck. At 01.14 we see him wearing a black cardigan with a white and a gold chain, gold ring and a gold watch.
At 02.53 minutes ...
The use of costume links to the lyrics setting and location because when the video first starts, there is a close of the car (Aston Martin) throughout the song 'Aston Martin' is mentioned, and we see various amounts of cars , Moreover in this song Rick Ross is rapping about success this is shown through his costume. He is constantly wearing Gold jewellery which connotes wealth, success quality, prestige and sophistication. This is typical for a Hip-hop / RnB Music video , most of the time the artist tends to Money everywhere, Botty Pooping really shiny jewellery , Cars , Females , Alcohol etc.
Examples; T-Pain - Up Down , Lil Wayne - Love Me.
Use of Setting and Location.
The video contains 5 different locations. On the beautiful beautiful side of Miami, that outdoors feeling , a neighbourhood, and a car park. The use of setting and location links to the genre because in most Hip-Hop music videos it is typically to have different amounts of locations and most of which are luxury or very appealing and great views.
Iggy Azalea - Fancy ft. Charli XCX (Pop)
Use of setting and location.
In this this music video 4 locations are used, Her bedroom , High School (classroom , Playground , Basketball pitch, corridors) Los Angeles roads and a House.
The setting and location links to the costume because it is set in high school and Iggy and the people around her are dressed like teenagers, they are wearing min skirts, long white socks, dolly shoes etc. this is a stereotype of a student. The use of setting and location links to the genre because in most music video they tend to use well know places in this case it is Los Angeles when they are driving, Also some video are set in school such as; Britney Spears - Baby One More Time and Lil Mama Lip - Gloss. they are both pop music videos. Pop videos are known for having more than one location and the stereotype is followed,.
Use of costume.
Iggy Azalea recreates the movie Clueless in her music video. Its all about fashion ;she has about 5
different costumes, a yellow and black blazer , yellow top and yellow mini skirt. Pink t-shirt , gym clothe , white to etc.
The costume links to the setting and location because it was set in a High School & you can see teenagers wearing normal/ everyday clothing that you would wear to school. Furthermore it relates to the lyrics because she talking about being 'Fancy' and she's wearing fancying clothing throughout the music video or what teenagers in a High School would call fancy.
The costume also links to this genre (Pop). Sex sells in most Pop music videos, music artist have found sexuality to be a quick and easy way to attract an audience. The music industry has given into perpetuating themselves stereotypes by portraying women based on their physically appearance. The serotype is being followed in this video because Iggy is wearing revealing clothing, the yellow and black mini skirt, black and red skirt etc. For example in Botty' Jennifer Lopez Ft Iggy Azalea, they are both basically naked; Most music videos reinforce the stereotypical role of women in which are modelling , dancing provocatively , attractive etc.

The Heavy - How You Like Me Now? (Rock , Heavy Metal,Funk)
Use of costume.
One change of costume. The are all wearing a black blazer and white with a Skelton print and black bottoms. the costume has nothing to do with lyrics, setting and location because on like un like Hip-Hop and Pop videos , they want their audience to focus more on their talent than their appearance, In most Rock music video the lyrics or location/setting does not link to the costume, it has one change of costume throughout the video. For example 'System Of The Down' they have the same genre and they normally wear the same clothing or very simple clothing on stage such a white top and black/blue jeans etc.
Use of setting and location
This video only contains one location which is the Forest. The costume does not link to the setting and location because it is set in a forest and they are wearing suits , it is not typical to be wearing a suit in the forest, especially if you are performing in band this video challenges the stereotype of rock music videos in terms of location because most rock music video are performed on a stage or in a warehouse.
